To count down to a date, subtract today from the target date: days = target − from. Enter the date you're counting down to and the calculator shows how many days remain, broken into whole weeks and extra days. It counts from today by default. From 2026-01-01, Christmas (December 25) is 358 days away — 51 weeks and 1 day.

How it works

A countdown is just the number of days from now until a future date:

days until = target date − from date

The from date defaults to today, so you see the days remaining right now, but you can count from any date. The result is split into whole weeks and extra days for an at-a-glance read — 358 days is 51 weeks and 1 day.

Because it works in whole calendar days, it automatically accounts for month lengths and leap years: any span that crosses a February 29 includes it. If the target date is in the past, the count is negative — telling you how many days ago it was.

Worked example

From 2026-01-01, Christmas (December 25) is 358 days away — that is 51 weeks and 1 day. New Year 2027 (January 1) is 365 days, exactly 52 weeks and 1 day. A date a week in the past shows −7 days.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until a date?

Subtract today from the target date: days = target − from. The calculator counts every calendar day between them, including leap days, and defaults to counting from today. From January 1, 2026, Christmas is 358 days away.

How do I count down to an event?

Enter the event's date as the target. The days-until figure updates from today, and the weeks-and-days breakdown makes long counts easy to read — for example 100 days is 14 weeks and 2 days.

Does the countdown update automatically?

Yes — the "count from" date defaults to today, so on page load it shows the days remaining as of now. You can set the from date to a different day to count down from then instead.

What if the date has already passed?

The count becomes negative, showing how many days ago the date was. For example, a date one week in the past reads −7 days. Swap it into the target field of a days-between calculation if you want a plain positive count.

How are weeks and days worked out?

The total days are divided by seven: the whole-number part is the full weeks and the remainder is the extra days. So 358 days is 51 weeks (357 days) with 1 day left over.

Does it count business days only?

No — it counts every calendar day, including weekends and holidays. A working-day countdown would exclude weekends and a country's holidays, which is a separate calculation.
