This is the average-speed relation solved for distance. Since average speed is the distance travelled divided by the time taken (v = d ÷ t), rearranging gives:

d = v × t

Travel at a steady speed v for a time t and you cover a distance of v × t. It is unit-agnostic: enter the speed and time in matching units and the distance follows. Miles per hour with hours gives miles; kilometres per hour with hours gives kilometres; metres per second with seconds gives metres.

This assumes a constant average speed. If your speed varies, use your average speed over the whole trip — the single steady speed that would cover the same distance in the same time.

Worked example

Driving at 60 mph for 2.5 hours covers 60 × 2.5 = 150 miles. A highway run at 65 mph for 3 hours is 195 miles, a short walk at 3 mph for half an hour is 1.5 miles, and a flight cruising at 500 mph for 4 hours covers 2000 miles. Double the time at the same speed and you double the distance.
