How it works

Drywall (plasterboard) is sold in sheets. To find how many you need, divide the total surface area — walls plus ceiling — by the area of one sheet, adding a bit for waste:

sheets = ⌈area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area⌉

A standard sheet is 4 × 8 ft = 32 square feet; 4 × 12 ft sheets (48 sq ft) reduce seams on big walls. Sheet size is an input, so set it to what you are buying. A 10% waste allowance covers cuts around openings and offcuts you cannot reuse; the result rounds up to whole sheets.

You can count the wall and ceiling area without subtracting doors and windows — the offcuts often cannot be reused anyway, so leaving openings in gives a natural buffer.

Worked example

A room with 480 sq ft of drywall (walls and ceiling), using 4 × 8 sheets (32 sq ft) and a 10% waste allowance, needs (480 × 1.1) ÷ 32 = 16.5 → 17 sheets. Sizing the same job with 4 × 12 sheets (48 sq ft) drops it to ⌈528 ÷ 48⌉ = 11 sheets with fewer seams. A 200 sq ft ceiling alone is 7 sheets.

You can, but many estimators leave them in. Offcuts from around openings are often too small to reuse, so counting the openings as solid wall provides a built-in margin. For a large opening like a garage door, subtracting it is reasonable.

How does sheet size affect the count?

Larger sheets cover more per piece, so you need fewer and get fewer seams to tape and finish — but they are heavier and harder to handle. On ceilings and long walls, bigger sheets usually win; in tight spaces, standard 4×8 sheets are easier.

Does this include screws, tape or joint compound?

No — it counts the sheets only. Fasteners, joint tape and compound are estimated separately, roughly from the sheet count and the length of the seams. This calculator sizes the board itself.
