How it works

Your course grade is a weighted average of the work you have already done and the final exam. If the final is worth a fraction w of the grade, then everything else counts for (1 − w), and:

Course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w

Setting the course grade equal to your target and solving for the final gives:

Needed on the final = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

where w is the final's weight written as a fraction (a 30% final means w = 0.30). The calculator also reports the best possible grade (if you ace the final) and the worst possible grade (if you score zero), so you can see the whole range still on the table:

  • Best possible = current × (1 − w) + 100 × w
  • Worst possible = current × (1 − w)

If the needed score comes out above 100%, the target is out of reach — the "best possible" figure tells you the highest grade you can still earn. If it comes out very low or even negative, you have already secured the target no matter how the final goes.

Worked example

You have 88%, want to finish at 90%, and the final is worth 30% (w = 0.30):

Needed = (90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 61.6) ÷ 0.30 = 28.4 ÷ 0.30 ≈ 94.7%

The best you could finish is 61.6 + 30 = 91.6% (acing the final) and the worst is 61.6% (scoring zero) — so 90% is achievable, but it takes a strong final.

How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?

Use needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight as a fraction. For 88% current, a 90% target and a 30% final, that is (90 − 61.6) ÷ 0.30 ≈ 94.7%.

What does the final exam weight mean?

It is the share of your total course grade that the final is worth. A final worth 30% means the rest of your work makes up the other 70%. Enter the weight your syllabus lists.

What if the needed score is over 100%?

Then your target is no longer reachable — even a perfect final falls short. The "best possible grade" output shows the highest grade you can still finish with, so you can set a realistic target.

What if I need a very low or negative score?

It means you have already locked in your target: even a zero on the final keeps you at or above it. The "worst possible grade" output confirms the floor.

Does this work for any weighted component, not just a final?

Yes. The same formula finds the score needed on any single remaining item — a project or last test — as long as you enter that item's weight and treat everything else as the current grade.

Is my current grade the average of my scores?

It should be your current weighted average excluding the final — the grade you would have if the final didn't count. Most gradebooks show this figure directly.
