How it works
A raw step count doesn't by itself say how many calories you burned — two people can take 10,000 steps and spend very different amounts of energy. What ties the two together is cadence, your steps per minute, because it captures both halves of the calculation at once: how intensely you're walking and how long it takes to rack up the steps.
Research on walking cadence gives two well-established anchor points: about 100 steps per minute corresponds to moderate intensity (3 METs), and about 130 steps per minute to vigorous intensity (6 METs). A MET is a multiple of resting energy, and by convention one MET is roughly one calorie per kilogram of body weight per hour. Put those together:

The steps ÷ cadence part is simply the minutes you spent walking; dividing by 60 turns it into hours, and MET × weight × hours is the energy.
Worked example
Take 8,000 steps at a moderate pace for a 70 kg person. At 100 steps a minute that's 80 minutes on foot — 1.33 hours — and 3 METs:
calories = 3 × 70 × (8000 ÷ 100) ÷ 60 = 3 × 70 × 1.33 = 280 calories
Walk those same 8,000 steps vigorously (130 steps/min, 6 METs) and you cover them in about 62 minutes but at twice the intensity, for roughly 431 calories — about 54% more, because the higher intensity outweighs the shorter time.
