How it works
The fuel for a trip depends on how far you drive, how thirsty the car is, and the price of gas. Divide the distance by the fuel economy to get the gallons used, then multiply by the price:
total cost = (distance ÷ MPG) × price per gallon
This is the same method the EPA uses on the fuel-economy label — miles driven ÷ MPG × price per gallon. Switch on round trip to count the drive home, which simply doubles the distance. To share the cost, divide the total among everyone in the car:
cost per person = total cost ÷ travelers
Only fuel is counted here. A real trip budget also includes food, lodging, tolls and wear, but fuel is usually the biggest variable, and it is the part that scales directly with distance and gas price.
Worked example
A 250-mile each-way weekend trip is a 500-mile round trip. At 30 MPG that is 500 ÷ 30 = 16.7 gallons; at $3.70 a gallon the fuel is about $61.67. Split between 2 people, that is about $30.83 each. An 800-mile round trip in a 20 MPG SUV at $4.00 costs $320, or $80 each for four.
