The National Academies' Dietary Reference Intakes set an Adequate Intake for total water of 3.7 litres a day for men aged 19 and over and 2.7 litres for women — 3.3 and 2.3 litres at ages 14–18, and 2.4 and 2.1 litres at ages 9–13. Crucially this is total water, which the source defines as all water contained in food, beverages and drinking water, so it is not a target for glasses of water alone. The figures are Adequate Intakes by life stage, not a formula based on bodyweight.

How it works

There is nothing to calculate here, and that is the honest answer. The Dietary Reference Intakes publish water as an Adequate Intake per life-stage group — a lookup by sex and age — and no per-kilogram equation. So this page reports the published figure rather than multiplying your weight by a number.

That matters because most water calculators do multiply. The common rates, around 30 to 35 mL per kilogram of bodyweight, and the familiar "eight glasses a day", have no issuing publication behind them that we could find. We take the same line here as on the TDEE page: where a convention is widespread but unsourced, we publish what the primary actually says and tell you the numbers will differ from other calculators.

Read the units carefully. The source's own footnote defines total water as "all water contained in food, beverages, and drinking water". Food contributes a meaningful share — soups, fruit, vegetables, and most cooked foods are largely water — and every drink counts, including tea, coffee, milk and juice. So 3.7 litres is not 3.7 litres of plain water to drink on top of everything else. The DRI table does not split the food and beverage shares, so neither do we.

One more piece of context: these are Adequate Intakes, not Recommended Dietary Allowances. An AI is used when the evidence is not sufficient to establish an RDA — it is an observed intake of apparently healthy people, not a requirement derived from measured need. It deserves to be read as a reference point rather than a target to hit exactly.

Worked example

A 30-year-old man falls in the 19-and-over group: total water AI 3.7 litres a day (3,700 mL). A 30-year-old woman is in the corresponding group at 2.7 litres (2,700 mL). The figure does not change with age after 19 — the DRI lists the same value for 19–30, 31–50, 51–70 and over 70.

A 16-year-old boy is in the 14–18 group at 3.3 litres, and a girl of the same age at 2.3 litres.

For scale against the folk rule: eight 240 mL glasses is about 1.9 litres, which is roughly half the men's figure — but the two are not comparable, because the glasses rule is about drinking water and the DRI figure is total water from all sources.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to drink 3.7 litres of water a day?

No — that is the misreading the number invites. The 3.7 litres is total water from all sources, including food and every beverage you drink. The DRI does not say how much of it should come from plain water, and this page does not invent a split. Thirst, plus paying attention if you are ill, very active, or in heat, is the practical guide most people need.

Where does the "eight glasses a day" rule come from?

Not from the Dietary Reference Intakes. We could not find an issuing publication for it, which is why this page does not use it. Eight 240 mL glasses is about 1.9 litres — well below both DRI figures, but measuring a different thing, since the DRI counts food and all beverages.

Why isn't there a bodyweight input?

Because the DRI does not publish a per-kilogram water requirement for adults. Calculators that ask your weight are applying a rate — typically 30 to 35 mL per kilogram — that we could not trace to a source. Adding an input that changes the answer using an unsourced multiplier would make the page feel more precise while making it less trustworthy.

Do coffee and tea count?

Yes. The AI counts all beverages, and caffeinated drinks contribute to total water intake. The old idea that coffee dehydrates you on net does not hold at ordinary intakes, though this page takes no position beyond noting that the DRI figure includes all beverages without exception.

Does my need change if I exercise or it's hot?

Yes, and the AI does not model that. Sweat losses vary enormously with intensity, duration, heat and humidity, and can add litres in a day. The DRI values describe apparently healthy people under ordinary conditions. Athletes and people working in heat need individualised guidance, not a table.

What about pregnancy and breastfeeding?

The DRI sets higher values: 3.0 litres a day during pregnancy and 3.8 litres during lactation, across the 14–50 age groups. Those appear in the reference table on this page, but the calculator does not select them, since it takes only sex and age — read them from the table directly.

Can you drink too much water?

Yes. Drinking far beyond your needs in a short period can dilute blood sodium dangerously — hyponatraemia — which is a genuine medical emergency and has occurred in endurance athletes and in people forcing intake to hit a target. This is another reason to treat the figure here as a reference point rather than a quota to complete.

What does this exclude?

It excludes exercise, heat, altitude, illness with fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, and any medical condition or medication affecting fluid balance — kidney and heart conditions in particular, where fluid intake is often deliberately restricted under clinical direction. It also excludes infants and children under 9, whose values the DRI publishes separately.
