How it works

Weight conversion between the metric and US/imperial systems rests on one exact definition (NIST SP 811):

• 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg (exactly), so 1 kg ≈ 2.2046 lb.
• 1 ounce = 1/16 pound ≈ 28.35 g, and 1 stone = 14 pounds ≈ 6.35 kg.
• Metric mass steps by powers of ten: 1 kg = 1000 g.
