How it works

A percent means "per hundred", so converting a fraction to a percent is a two-step process:

1. Divide the numerator by the denominator to find the fraction's value as a decimal.
2. Multiply by 100 and add the percent sign.

For 3/4, dividing 3 by 4 gives 0.75, and multiplying by 100 gives 75%. A fraction, per Wolfram MathWorld, is just a rational number a/b, so this works for any fraction — proper, improper or whole.
