How it works

Percent means "per hundred", so a percentage is already a fraction with a denominator of 100. Converting is two steps:

1. Write the percent as a fraction over 100 — 75% becomes 75/100.
2. Reduce to lowest terms by dividing top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

For 75%, the greatest common divisor of 75 and 100 is 25, so dividing both by 25 gives 3/4. A fraction, per Wolfram MathWorld, is just a rational number a/b — and every percent is one.

Percentages with decimals still work: 12.5% is 12.5/100 = 125/1000, which reduces to 1/8. A percent over 100 becomes an improper fraction — 150% is 150/100 = 3/2, or 1 1/2 as a mixed number.

Take 75%. Write it over 100 as 75/100, then divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor, 25: 75 ÷ 25 = 3 and 100 ÷ 25 = 4. The fraction is 3/4. For 150%, the same steps give 3/2, or 1 1/2.
